Por Qué vs. Porque vs. Porqué vs. Por Que

These four spellings are pronounced almost the same, so even native speakers mix them up in writing. The good news is that two of them cover almost everything you will ever write. Use por qué to ask “why?” and porque to answer “because.” The other two are much less common.

Quick answer

  • Por qué (two words, with an accent) asks why: ¿Por qué llegas tarde? (Why are you late?)
  • Porque (one word) means because: Llego tarde porque hay tráfico. (I am late because there is traffic.)
  • Porqué is a noun, the reason. Por que is rare: No entiendo el porqué. (I do not understand the reason.)

Por qué: the question word

Write por qué as two words with an accent on qué whenever you ask why. It works in direct questions with question marks and in indirect questions, where the question is inside another sentence.

Examples

  • ¿Por qué estudias español?Why do you study Spanish?Direct question.
  • ¿Por qué no vienes a la fiesta? Why don’t you come to the party?Negative question.
  • No sé por qué está enojado.I do not know why he is angry.Indirect question, no question marks.
  • Dime por qué llegaste tarde.Tell me why you arrived late.Indirect question after a command.

Porque: the answer

Porque is one word with no accent, and it means “because.” It joins two parts of a sentence, or it starts your answer to a “why” question.

Examples

  • Estudio español porque quiero viajar a México.I study Spanish because I want to travel to Mexico.Gives the reason.
  • No fui al trabajo porque estaba enfermo.I did not go to work because I was sick.Past reason.
  • ¿Por qué comes tanto? Porque tengo hambre. Why do you eat so much? Because I am hungry.Question and answer.
  • Porque sí.Just because.A fixed phrase for “no particular reason.”

Porqué and por que: the rare ones

Porqué is a masculine noun that means “the reason.” You will see it with an article, like el porqué or los porqués. It is most common in formal writing and in titles.

Por que (two words, no accent) is the preposition por followed by que. It appears in fixed patterns such as la razón por que or after verbs that need por. Most people use por la que instead, which is easier.

Examples

  • No entiendo el porqué de su decisión.I do not understand the reason for his decision.Porqué is a noun here.
  • Esa es la razón por la que me fui. That is the reason why I left. The common way to say it.
  • Hay que luchar por que haya paz.We must fight for there to be peace.Por que plus subjunctive: rare.

A quick way to choose

Ask yourself two questions. First, is it a question or an indirect question about the reason? Then write por qué. Second, can you replace it with “because”? Then write porque. If you need a noun meaning “the reason,” write porqué. Anything else is probably por que, and you can often rewrite it with por la que.

Spanish around the world

  • The rules are the same in every Spanish-speaking country. In everyday messages many people skip the accent marks, but in school, work, and formal writing the accent on qué is expected.

Common mistakes

  • Incorrect: ¿Porque llegas tarde?

    Correct: ¿Por qué llegas tarde?

A question needs two words and an accent: por qué.

  • Incorrect: Llego tarde por qué hay tráfico.

Correct: Llego tarde porque hay tráfico.

For “because,” write one word with no accent.

  • Incorrect: No sé porque se fue.

Correct: No sé por qué se fue.

An indirect question still needs por qué.

  • Incorrect: Por que no?

    Correct: ¿Por qué no?

Add both question marks and the accent. In Spanish the opening mark ¿ is required.

Remember the rule

  • Por qué asks why, in direct and indirect questions. It has an accent.
  • Porque means because. One word, no accent.
  • Porqué is a noun (the reason). Por que is rare, and you can often say por la que instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if it is por qué or porque?

If you can replace it with “why,” write por qué. If you can replace it with “because,” write porque. A question mark is a strong sign that you need por qué.

Does porque ever have an accent?

No. The one-word form porque never takes an accent.

Why does Spanish write ‘por qué’ as two words?

In this form, “qué” is a real question word (“what”), so the phrase literally means “for what.” That is why it keeps its accent and stays separate.

Can I answer ‘¿Por qué?’ with ‘Porque sí’?

Yes, but it can sound rude because it means “just because” with no explanation. Use it only with people you know well.
